This fascinating phenomenon, where vortices appear first on one side of the column and then on the other, was ingeniously conceptualized by Karmen and is famously known as the Karman Vortex. Karmen further provided a groundbreaking relationship between the frequency of these vortices and the velocity at which they occur, with the influential coefficient in this relationship being dubbed the Strouhal number.
