Function and Measurement System
Measuring Principle
The MGS series of guided wave radar level meters, a pinnacle in measurement technology, operate on the Time of Flight principle. They precisely emit high-frequency pulse signals that travel along the probe. Upon encountering the material surface, these signals are reflected and journey back to the instrument. Using advanced equivalent sampling technology, the time difference from emission to reception is ingeniously converted into the precise distance from the instrument's reference point to the material surface. This enables accurate calculation of the level, utilizing the renowned TDR Time Domain Reflectometry method.

Import
The echo pulse signal, a marvel of technological ingenuity, travels from the probe to the instrument's electronic unit. Here, a sophisticated microprocessor expertly analyzes the signal to discern the true level echo. Intelligent software ensures accurate identification, with measurement distance D calculated as D=c * t / 2, where c is the speed of light. With the established empty tank height E, the level L is determined as L =E-D, offering precision and reliability. Refer to the figure for clarity on these measurements.


Output
The instrument is intelligently configured to adapt seamlessly to current measurement applications by setting the empty tank height (zero point), full tank height (full scale), and application parameters. This ensures a smooth and efficient output of 4~20mA, aligning with user preferences. Additionally, seamless communication is facilitated through the HART protocol.

· Usually, cable probes are used to measure solid particles, and rod probes are only suitable for measuring light solid particles with good fluidity in small ranges (about 4m);
· Rod or coaxial rod probes are usually used to measure small range of liquids. Cable probes are used to measure liquids with a range greater than 4m or in situations where rigid probes cannot be installed on the top space;
· The coaxial rod probe can measure the viscosity of liquids up to 500cst, the coaxial rod probe can measure liquefied gas, the nozzle and the internal structure of the material tank have no effect on the measurement;
· When used for measuring the material level of large bins, the cable probe should be equipped with a plastic sheath to maintain the seal and prevent the cable from breaking due to side pressure;
· Corrosive media should be selected for corrosion protection;
· When the measured medium is a very loose material, it can be classified as a class with low dielectric constant;
· The maximum range of the instrument will be reduced due to the influence of working conditions, such as: very loose surface material, adhesion caused by wet medium.

1. The top blind area refers to the minimum distance between the highest material surface and the measurement reference point; 2. The bottom blind area refers to the distance near the bottom of the probe that cannot be measured accurately;

Selection guide

· The MPS3300 Horn Antenna Pulse Radar is designed for robust performance in challenging environments. It excels in measuring strongly corrosive and intricate media within storage or process containers, including but not limited to water tanks, acid and alkali storage, and slurry tanks, by utilizing different horn apertures.1) For class A medium, opt for the waveguide (20m) to ensure precise and reliable measurements.

· The MPS3700 series pulse radar offers superior measurement capabilities for solid levels in large-scale process containers. Its adaptability to various antenna opening sizes makes it ideal for applications like coke level measurement, slurry storage, and solid particles.



Measuring condition
• Measurement range begins where the radar beam meets the tank bottom. In tanks with disc-bottom or conical discharge ports, levels below this point are not measurable, highlighting the importance of starting measurement from this critical juncture.
• For media with low dielectric constants (Class A and B), if the medium's level is low (as indicated by figure C), the tank bottom might be visible. To maximize measurement accuracy, set the zero point away from the tank bottom at point C (refer to the figure).
• The theoretical measurement range can extend to the antenna's end. However, to account for potential corrosion and adhesion, maintain a minimum distance of A from the top of the antenna, particularly under condensation conditions.
The minimum measurement range, denoted as B, is contingent upon the chosen antenna type. Refer to the accompanying table for detailed specifications.
Ensure the tank diameter exceeds D, and its height is at least H, as specified in the table below, to achieve optimal measurement performance.

· Influence of gas phase
Steam on the liquid surface can slow signal transmission due to high pressure, especially in low temperatures. As the distance from the measurement zero point (flange) to the material surface extends, measurement error increases, as detailed in the table.
